Kitty Collins Reviews
This book is responsible for kick-starting my interest in jazz. I first read it in the 80s when it was published and have read it a couple of times a decade since. It's nice that each time I can relate a little more to what he's talking about. It's not a perfect novel - the pacing and plot are great, but the characters aren't as full as they could be - they fall a little bit into "types." The main character, Kitty, is a bit of a Mary Jane, but at the same time, like all but the best writers, Gould has trouble showing his opposite-gender protagonist as a complete human being rather than a woman, the Other.
