All the Different Ways Love Can Feel Reviews
ALL THE DIFFERENT WAYS LOVE CAN FEEL is a smorgasbord of emotion. Love, hate, anger, indifference, angst, happiness, joy, disappointment--all these and many more bleed their way throughout these eleven stories. I found Max Everhart's writing contagious; a first sentence, or paragraph--never more than a page--and I was drawn into every tale. Most, if not all, of this collection is autobiographical to some extent. How do I know? I FEEL it! Father and son relationship is a common theme in several stories. The care for and bonding of one brother with another, or a brother's closeness and love for his sister, are other paths threading through the pages of Everhart's seminal work. A few times this former "badass" Marine found himself on the verge of tears. The characters are wonderfully flawed and fleshed-out. The dialogue is sparse and real. The stories are raw with feeling, raw and intense and gutty.I became a big Max Everhart fan when I found and devoured his excellent mystery series featuring private eye Eli Sharpe: GO GO GATO; SPLIT TO SPLINTERS (a SHAMUS Award finalist); and ED, NOT EDDIE; and then his rough and tumble crime/noir novel, ALPHABET LAND. ALL THE DIFFERENT WAYS . . . opens up a whole new facet of Everhart's talent as a writer to be reckoned with. I miss Eli Sharpe and hope to see him in future mysteries. But as long as Max Everhart keeps baring his soul through his words, I'll be waiting in anticipation for his next book.
Max Everhart’s ALL THE DIFFERENT WAYS LOVE CAN FEEL is an exquisitely crafted collection of short stories in which the prose is gritty rather than lyrical. The book rips the skin of life to the bone in each character, all of whom are in transitional stages of life and evolving. The reader gets a floodlit view into the inner realms of the protagonists’ thoughts in freeze frame at particular points of desperation. The searchlight of love pierces their imperfections and limitations. The stories are written in different tenses and the immediacy of the prose leaves a haunting ache. The force of life throbs through these stories like a beating heart that engulfs all as we are entrapped within its pulsing membrane. The struggles of life resonate in the characters as they love each other through unlovable stages or immature personality. There is much here about men’s efforts to arm their sons for the battles to come and the difficulty they find in dealing with unconventional headstrong women. The connection between siblings is explored as are the boundaries in what they can do for each other. The boys try to put their best face forward and find themselves in wretched stages of life where it takes a brutal attempt to find a best face to put forward. The heart-wrenching power of love comes fully to the surface in how it brings us to our knees, a living force that cannot be seen, only felt as we are molded by its power. This is a deeply moving collection that often pierced my defenses like an arrow and I found myself in tears. Highly Recommended
