This is a really interesting, powerful book. At first, I found Bengi’s writing sort of contrived and maybe a little overly dramatic. As I got into the book, though, I found myself riveted to the thoughts and ideas Bengis explores. The book is divided into three sections, Man-Hating, Lesbianism and Love. Being something of a man-hater myself, I found that I could identify to some extent with what Bengis was saying. This carried through to the rest of the book, where I found myself not only identifying with the author on many levels but also questioning my attitudes and beliefs about women, love, sex, marriage, etc.Combat In The Erogenous Zone offers no answers or even suggestions, which may make it one of the most honest books ever written on the subjects of love and relationships. Instead, Bengis lets it all out, puts it on the page and leaves you to react and decide what’s what. This is one of the most honest pieces of writing like this I’ve encountered. Unless you are an ignorant, close minded, callous waste of skin, the honesty will pull you in, maybe even chew you up and spit you out. There’s this song by Cringer that goes, “I try to understand/for what it’s worth coming from a man.” I can’t really understand what it’s like for a woman or an African American or any other minority discriminated against throughout this country’s history. But I was a punk when it was decidedly not popular to be and I was a little fat kid, so I think that lends a little understanding. I’ve certainly been a minority at times. I think the important thing is to try to understand, to try to see things through other peoples’ eyes. Books like Combat In The Erogenous Zone go a long way to increasing that understanding.
