Just Thinking: Thoughts on Spirituality, Loss, Love & One Day at a Time Reviews
When I received this wonderful little book, for free, from GoodReads First Reads, I was delighted. Great! A free book. When I noticed it was nothing but a collection of thoughts, ponderings, observations by the author, I was a bit disappointed. But then I began to browse through the pages, and recognized the depth of many of the short sayings. I see these as starting points for my own thinking on many situations, as points to initiate spiritual journaling, or as simple optimisms to carry throughout the day. No plot, no organizational structure, just...thinking. Enjoy.
I received a copy of “Just Thinking: Thoughts on Spirituality, Loss, Love & One Day at a Time” by Jim Moeller free in a giveaway on the Good Reads website.I will be honest, I really wasn’t holding great expectations for the book. However, I can truly say that “Just Thinking” is one of the most powerful books I have read. It’s written in the form of small bites of Jim’s thoughts taken from his journals. This is a man who has seen adversity and met it on his terms, and it shows clearly in his writing.I sat down and read “Just Thinking” in one sitting. However, this really isn’t a book that should be read like that. Its snippets of thought and wisdom really need to be slowly digested and mulled over, not gorged on like I did.“Just Thinking” is what I call a ‘soul comfort’ book. The type of book you pick up when your heart is heavy. This book is not leaving my possession. It will join the several other books on my shelf that provide wisdom and comfort when I most need it.“Just Thinking” reminded me irresistibly of one of my favourite wisdom books – The Tao Te Ching. Nothing I can put my finger on, I just found myself thinking that both books had a similar feel to them.I will be spending a lot of time with “Just Thinking”. Many of Jim’s thoughts seem to me to be perfect to meditate upon.I would not hesitate to recommend “Just Thinking” to anyone on their own personal spiritual quest. It’s not a “guide book” in the sense of “do this and you will be happy/successful/fulfilled” like those produced by many new age gurus. This book is more a book of sign posts leading you down your own paths of thought and discovery.Jim Moeller doesn’t profess to know all the answers, but he asks a hell of a lot of really good questions.
So far I found this book very entertaining and insightful. I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started reading the quotes and little stories. Jim the author has a great sense of humor at times and also knows how to tell you like it is. I feel like his words come from his heart and I also feel like through his writing you can tell that even though he has had trials and tribulations he is eager to continue on his journey in life. To me the book is written in a matter of fact way. I look forward to finishing this and looking into more books by Jim. I hope whoever reads this review will take the time like I did to read his insights and inspirations. I like his spirituality. What I mean is how he refers to God in many of his quotes. I advise the reader to sit back and take their time in reading this a few pages at a time so that the reader can really get what Jim's messages are saying.
This is a book of thoughts. It does not read like a novel, or a story of any kind. It is 150 pages of thoughts. The author shares the lessons he has learned throughout his life, yet the book is not an autobiography. He denotes about 5 or 6 pages of his life explaining how he came to these life lessons, but the book left me wanting more of his life stories in narrative form. Perhaps the reader would be better able to relate and learn from his experiences if he included this especially since the author has a varied background and has experienced things most people never will. The book reminds me of the Book of Proverbs. Anyone can read this book and learn a great deal of what matters most in life, and what does not. Thank you to the author, Jim Moeller for sharing your wisdom and for serving our country.
I think this book could be half of the pages that it is. There are quite a lot of 'thoughts' that are saying the same thing just written in different ways. I don't know if this was done on purpose for the authors message to sink in, however, I found it a little irritating. On the other hand, I don't think this book is meant to be read in one sitting, or by those who are content in their lives. If you are feeling down, or are facing something in your life then this book could offer the reader some solace in their troubles. What I would perhaps have liked is to see what was happening at that point in the authors life that made this thought special to him. It may have put a bit of substance and more meaning to the words on the page.
I liked the thoughts displayed by the author greatly as I am dealing with my wife's cancer. I found many of his thoughts to be exactly as I felt at the time. The writing was good though I had to reread several thoughts before I could make sense of it, But I know lots of my own thoughts never make much sense. I know what I am dealing with is not the same as what the author dealt with ,but I think the thoughts could be interpreted in many different ways to help you cope with the many curve balls life throws at us all.
Just Thinking: Thoughts on Spirituality, Loss, Love & One Day at a TimeI found this to be a very easy to read book. It's written in thought format, so you can put it down and easily pick it right back up and continue on. I also found it to be very thought provoking. Thanks for your insight and for sharing your thoughts.Living life one day at a time is so important
